The MVV ticket as an add-on to the Card

Public transport isn't automatically part of the Munich Card: when you buy, you choose whether you want it with or without an MVV ticket. There are two areas to choose from. Zone M covers the city of Munich, where almost all the discount partners are. Zone M-6 covers the entire MVV network and includes the airport, Dachau and Lake Starnberg.

With the ticket you can travel as much as you like within your chosen zone on the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, bus and regional trains. Long-distance trains such as ICE and IC are not included. The ticket is valid for the same 1 to 5 consecutive days as the Card, from the start date you set when you buy it. Because the ticket is personalised, the booking asks for the names and dates of birth of everyone travelling.

Travelling alone or as a group

With the group ticket for up to 5 people (two children aged 6 to 14 count as one person), the group shares one MVV ticket. It's issued to the main cardholder, who has to be there on every journey. If you split up during the day, the others need their own tickets for those journeys. The partner discounts, on the other hand, can be used by each group member individually.

Using the ticket

The Card arrives by email after payment, and the MVV ticket shows up within a few minutes. There's nothing to validate. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn have no ticket barriers: just get on, but always have the ticket on your phone, as inspectors carry out spot checks. If you bought the Card without an MVV ticket, you'll need regular tickets for buses and trains, for example from the MVGO app or a ticket machine.

Timetables and app

For connections and real-time departures, the official MVGO app helps (iOS / Android). The U-Bahn and S-Bahn run from roughly 05:00 until 01:00; after that, night buses and night trams take over.

Key lines for visitors

  • Airport and main station: S-Bahn S1 or S8 from the airport into the city; you need Zone M-6 for this. From the main station (Hauptbahnhof) it's two stops on any S-Bahn to Marienplatz.
  • Nymphenburg Palace: tram 17 from Hauptbahnhof Nord.
  • Kunstareal: bus 100, the museum line, from Hauptbahnhof Nord to Ostbahnhof, stopping at the Pinakothek galleries.
  • Olympic Park: U-Bahn U3 to Olympiazentrum.
  • Allianz Arena and FC Bayern Museum: U-Bahn U6 to Fröttmaning.

Which sights along these lines give a discount is listed on the attractions page.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about public transport

Short answers about the Munich Card MVV ticket.

Do I need Zone M or M-6? +

Zone M is enough if you stay within the city, where almost all the partners are. You need M-6 for the S-Bahn to and from the airport and for trips to Dachau or Lake Starnberg.

How does a group travel on one ticket? +

With the group ticket, the MVV ticket is issued to the main cardholder, who has to be there on every journey; the other group members can't use it on their own. The partner discounts, on the other hand, can be used by every member individually.

Do I have to validate the ticket? +

No. The ticket is valid from the start date you booked. There are no ticket barriers on the U-Bahn and S-Bahn; if you're checked, just show the ticket on your phone.
